A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
