The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Because my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
