World Health Organization Issues Concern Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Under one in 10 people that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy have access to them, warns the World Health Organization as it publishes its first guidance on the therapies.

With over a billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to these injectable treatments.

Based on forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with thorough and lifelong treatment," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are significant barriers to universal availability to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing substantial body mass, notes the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even in the present best projected scenario, the supply of GLP-1 therapies could only cover about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.

The advice urges nations and manufacturers to widen access, by strategies including patent sharing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the primary component of a leading brand – is set to lapse in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Function

These medications mimick a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase the sense of being full so individuals reduce food intake.

People typically start to lose weight after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Research suggests patients may regain a significant portion within a year of discontinuing the medication, because their normal appetite come back.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your chance for developing diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some cancers.

Obesity concerns individuals in every country and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
