Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
